Korának egyik jelentős zeneszerzője katonacsaládba született. Apja sokáig ellenezte, hogy lánya zenét tanuljon, végül Ethel mégis elérte, hogy beiratkozhatott a lipcsei konzervatóriumba. Sokat komponált, zongoradarabokat, szonátákat, misét, operát. 1893-ban volt első angliai bemutatója. Ő volt az első nő, akinek operáját a Covent Gardenben előadták. Megismerkedett Emmeline Pankhursttel és lelkes híve lett a szüfrazsett mozgalomnak, két hónapra be is börtönözték. "The March of the Women" címmel írt műve  a mozgalom indulója  lett. 1922-ben megkapta a Dame of the British Empire címet. Lassan elvesztette hallását, nem tudott komponálni, ekkor írni kezdett, több regénye is megjelent. Leszbikusságát egész életében nyíltan vállalta.
